Continuing Student Scholarships
Scholarships for continuing students are awarded each year to academically talented students enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts. Students must be pursuing a liberal arts major with a liberal arts degree and enroll in 30 semester credits over the supported scholarship year (Fall and Spring semesters only). Students do not need to be enrolled in Honors to apply. All scholarships are restricted to students who intend to receive their Bachelor's degree from CLA; those who plan to complete their undergraduate program in a different college (e.g., the Carlson School of Management, the College of Biological Sciences, the College of Education and Human Development, etc.) are not eligible for these awards. Continuing Student Scholarships include departmental awards for English, Psychology, and Scientific and Technical Writing majors, as well as Jewish Studies majors or minors.The deadline for receipt (or U.S. mail postmark) of all application materials by the CLA Office of Undergraduate Programs is Friday, February 15, 2008 for awards for the 2008-2009 academic year. We will obtain your transcript and degree audits on your behalf. You may apply online at https://mycla.umn.edu/scholarship.php. Students transferring from within the University of Minnesota system should submit the paper version of the application. Apply by mail using the printable version of the Scholarship Application (requires the free Acrobat Reader) or call 612-624-8675 for a copy to be mailed to you.
Each application will be reviewed and considered for all scholarships for which the student is eligible. Financial need may be considered for all CLA awards. Students who wish to be considered for need-based awards should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can be found online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. The previous year's information will be used in the event that updated FAFSA information is not available prior to scholarship committee reviews. The FAFSA application should be submitted at your earliest convenience but no later than March 1, 2008.
Awards will be made for the 2008-2009 academic year. Half of the total award will be paid each semester of the academic year. Scholarship winners may receive funds from only one scholarship awarded by the College of Liberal Arts during an academic year, though you are permitted to hold an additional award made by a CLA department. Four-year scholarship recipients may apply for Continuing Student Scholarships but will receive the new award only if the amount is higher than their original scholarship. To receive your CLA award, you must complete at least 30 credits in the 2008-2009 school year (at least 13 each semester).

Collegiate Scholarships
CLA Alumni Scholarship for a Martin Luther King (MLK) Program Student
The CLA Alumni Scholarship for a student enrolled in the Martin Luther King (MLK) Program provides a stipend of approximately $3,000 to one student for the 2008-2009 academic year.Students applying for this scholarship must:
- be
a current freshman (during 2007-2008) enrolled in the MLK program,
- be making good academic progress as a full-time student,
- be a U.S.
citizen or permanent resident, and
- intend to declare a CLA major and pursue a CLA degree.
CLA Alumni Scholarship for Outstanding Non-Traditional Students
The CLA Alumni Scholarship for Outstanding Non-Traditional Students provides a stipend of approximately $3,000 for the 2008-2009 academic year to one student. A group of alumni and friends designed the award to recognize the unique role CLA plays in providing educational opportunities for students who do not meet the traditional definition of "college student."Examples of non-traditional students include, but are not limited to, displaced homemakers, students with disabilities, individuals starting their college careers after age 23, students with family responsibilities, individuals experiencing mid-career change, etc. The purpose of this award is to congratulate and encourage exceptional CLA students who have overcome remarkable odds by enrolling and successfully pursuing their college degrees.
Students applying for this scholarship must:
- be a non-traditional student,
- have completed not more than 75 semester credits by the end of fall term 2007, and
- have an officially declared CLA major and an overall CLA cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.
Harriet Thwing Holden Scholarship
The Harriet Thwing Holden Scholarship provides one $2,000 sophomore-year award for the 2008-2009 academic year to a current CLA freshman (during 2007-2008) who has achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better and who intends to declare a CLA major and pursue a CLA degree.ITT Consumer Financial Corporation Scholarship
The ITT Consumer Financial Corporation Scholarship provides a stipend of approximately $4,000 for the 2008-2009 academic year to one CLA student who:- is a resident of the State of Minnesota and graduated from a Minnesota public or private high school,
- will have completed at least one year of academic study at the University by June 2008,
- has an overall grade point average of at least 3.5, and
- is certified by the Office of Student Financial Aid as having financial need.
Neil Anderson Scholarship
The Neil Anderson Scholarship provides one $3,000 sophomore-year award for the 2008-2009 academic year to a current CLA freshman (during 2007-2008) who has achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better and who intends to declare a CLA major and pursue a CLA degree.Pre-Law Scholarship
This scholarship provides a stipend of approximately $2,500 for the 2008-2009 academic year to one student who plans to attend law school after graduating from CLA. Past award winners have earned a 3.5 GPA or higher. Both academic merit and financial need are criteria. Applicants must submit the federal application for need-based aid (FAFSA) no later than March 1, 2008.Selmer Birkelo Scholarship
Selmer Birkelo Scholarships provide one year of scholarship support for approximately 14 outstanding CLA students majoring in fields relating to history, modern languages, classics, or the social and behavioral sciences.Students must intend to pursue a degree from the College of Liberal Arts and may not be enrolled in any other college. Recipients will receive a stipend of up to $4000 for the 2008-2009 academic year. Students with declared, eligible majors (formally declared by Fall 2008) who wish to be considered for this scholarship will have their applications referred to their department or program for an initial screening; each eligible department or program may propose two or three nominees who will be considered for this award.
Applicants must have completed at least 30, but normally not more than 75, semester credits by the end of fall term 2007. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, with particular attention paid to depth of study in the major, general breadth of coursework, and clarity of academic purpose. Financial need is a consideration in determining award amounts.
Waller Scholarships
Waller Scholarships provide one year of scholarship support for approximately 75 CLA undergraduates and transfer students. Recipients will receive up to $3,000 for the 2008-2009 academic year. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, with some consideration given to co- or extra-curricular involvement. Financial need is a consideration in determining award amounts. Applicants must have completed at least 30 semester credits after spring term 2008, but normally not more than 75 semester credits by the end of fall term 2008. They must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better in all college coursework, including transfer coursework. They must also have strong liberal arts interests and intend to pursue a degree from the College of Liberal Arts.William E. Faragher Scholarship
The William E. Faragher Scholarship provides one award of $5,000 for the 2008-2009 academic year for a CLA student with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better who is majoring in mathematics, statistics, or another science-related field and completing a CLA bachelor of arts degree in one of these fields. The winner may be awarded the scholarship for more than one year, as long as s/he is gainfully working toward a degree and continues to meet the guidelines. Preference will be given to MN residents majoring in Mathematics.English Major Scholarships
The Department of English annually awards scholarships to English majors who have at least one year of full time study remaining for the B.A. degree as well as a thesis prize to summa cum laude degree candidates. To receive your Department of English award, you must register as a declared English major in the College of Liberal Arts as a full-time student (15 credits each semester) during the award year.Scholarships offered by the Department of English are intended for students who will receive their Bachelor of Arts degrees in English from the UM-Twin Cities College of Liberal Arts; those who plan to complete their undergraduate degrees in a different college (e.g., the Carlson School of Management, the Institute of Technology, etc.) are not eligible for these awards.

Anna Augusta Von Helmholtz Phelan Scholarship
This scholarship of approximately $2,000 is awarded annually to a currently enrolled undergraduate student in English (includes CLA undergraduates working on individualized degree programs with a creative writing emphasis). Eligible applicants are juniors who have financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Criteria include quality of writing, academic progress, and financial need.Complete and file your FAFSA by the annual deadline, March 1, 2008.
To be considered, students must send separately to the Department of English a creative writing sample of 6-8 pages of poetry or up to 15-20 pages of literary fiction or nonfiction prose, Attn: Beverly Atkinson, at the English Department address above.
Captain Dewitt Jennings Payne Memorial Scholarship
Captain DeWitt Jennings Payne Memorial Scholarships provide one year of scholarship support for one or two CLA students majoring in English, registered full time in the scholarship year. Students must intend to pursue a degree from the College of Liberal Arts and may not be enrolled in any other college. Recipients will receive a stipend of approximately $2,000 for the academic year.Students with declared English majors (formally declared by Fall of the scholarship year) must have completed 30, but normally not more than 75, semester credits by September 1 of the scholarship year. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, with particular attention paid to depth of study in the major, general breadth of coursework, and interest in advertising and similar pursuits.
These scholarships come from a fund established by the late Olivia Payne Stover in memory of her brother, Captain Payne, who was the first American aviator killed in World War I. It is awarded to students "who show special capacity for literary studies."
Donald V. Hawkins Scholarship
Donald V. Hawkins Scholarships are made possible by an endowment established in honor of Donald V. Hawkins' education and because of his love for the University of Minnesota. The endowment is intended to foster and support student and faculty excellence in undergraduate education in English and Communications.Hawkins Scholars are eligible for this scholarship of approximately $600 during their junior and/or senior years. They will carry a full credit load at the time of application and throughout the course of the scholarship, and will have a 3.3 grade point average in their major field of English or Communication Studies. Junior year recipients may apply for the scholarship in their senior year as well.
To be considered, students must send separately to the Department of English an essay written for one of their 3xxx University of Minnesota English courses and two letters of recommendation written by English faculty. Deliver these materials to the English Department address as noted above.
- Recipients will be offered the opportunity to work on the department's undergraduate journal, do research or an internship with a faculty mentor, or work on a project with one of the department's committees, depending on their interests.
- Typical Hawkins Scholars emphasize communication and the arts by taking courses in English, Communication Studies, Theatre Arts and Dance, Art History, Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature, or Journalism.
Jessie M. Comstock Scholarship
This scholarship of approximately $2,000 is awarded to a continuing student enrolled full-time as a University of Minnesota English major. Students must be eligible for financial aid according to the standards of the University's Office of Student Financial Aid. Complete and file your FAFSA by the annual deadline, March 1, 2008.Martin B. Ruud Memorial Scholarship
Martin B. Ruud Memorial Scholarships provide one year of scholarship support for approximately 3 outstanding CLA students majoring in English, registered full time in the scholarship year. Students must intend to pursue a degree from the College of Liberal Arts and may not be enrolled in any other college. Recipients will receive a stipend of approximately $3,500 for the academic year. Students with declared English majors (formally declared by September 1 of scholarship year) must have completed 30, but normally not more than 75, semester credits by the end of fall 2007.The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, with particular attention paid to depth of study in the major, general breadth of coursework, and clarity of academic purpose. Students are selected for this scholarship based on their outstanding achievement in literary studies and writing. Mr. Ruud was a Professor of English in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s.
Moses Marston Scholarship
Moses Marston Memorial Scholarships provide approximately $1,000 of support for English majors who demonstrate outstanding achievement in literary studies. Moses Marston held the Professorship of English Language and Literature from 1874 (five years after the University began instruction) until his death in 1883 (two years prior to the establishment of the Department of English). As with other English major scholarships, recipients must be enrolled full-time during the scholarship award year.Jewish Studies Scholarship
Leo and Lillian Gross Scholarship
The Leo and Lillian Gross Scholarship will provide one award of $1,900 for the 2008-2009 academic year for a student who is pursuing academic work in the field of Jewish Studies. Through the creation of The Leo and Lillian Gross Scholarship Fund in Jewish Studies, Jonathan Gross wishes to honor the memory of his mother and father who were staunch supporters of Jewish education and the strengthening and advancing of the Jewish culture.
Psychology Major Scholarships
The Department of Psychology is proud to offer Junita J. Mortensen Scholarships and awards for psychology undergraduate students. Students may receive these awards in addition to any other College of Liberal Arts award only if financial need has been demonstrated.Scholarships include academic scholarships to support campus-based study (five $1,000 scholarships for 2008-2009) and a study abroad scholarship to support off-campus international study (one $1,000 scholarship for study abroad during 2008-2009).
Applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduates with a declared major in psychology and have completed 30, but typically not more than 75, semester credits by the end of fall 2007. Applicants with more than 75 credits should submit a statement describing their need for an additional year of academic work.
Mortensen Academic Scholarships in Psychology
This academic scholarship is intended for psychology undergraduate majors to apply toward the cost of tuition, fees and books. Selection criteria include:- strength of student's academic record and promise;
- depth of involvement in the discipline and clarity of academic purpose;
- strength of student's statement and letters of recommendation, with preference given to those written by Department of Psychology faculty and instructors;
- past involvement in relevant extracurricular, volunteer, research and work activities. These awards are intended for our most talented majors.
Mortensen Study Abroad Scholarship in Psychology
The Study Abroad Scholarship in Psychology will be awarded to a psychology major studying abroad for an academic year or semester. Selection criteria include:- academic performance in the major;
- strength of student's statement and letter of recommendation; and
- the student's integration of study abroad within her/his psychology major academic plan.
Writing Studies Scholarship for Technical Communication Majors
Medtronic Technical Communication Scholarship
Medtronic will award a $2,000 scholarship award to
undergraduate student(s) who are majoring in the field of Technical
Communication. The award may be given to
a freshman and may be continued for four years if the student makes
satisfactory progress toward a Bachelor’s degree (students must reapply each
year). Sophomores, juniors, and seniors
with at least two semesters of full-time coursework remaining may apply as
well. An interview is required.
